General Anesthesia (Dentistry Asleep)
General anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness that eliminates awareness, movement and discomfort during dental treatment. All of your child’s treatment needs will be completed while he/she is asleep in one appointment.
Dentistry asleep may be beneficial for children with extensive dental needs and/or for those children in whom treatment awake cannot be provided in a safe manner. For very young children who are uncooperative, dentistry asleep can be a great option. Dentistry asleep also can be helpful for children requiring significant surgical procedures or patients with special health care needs.
We are proud to offer dentistry asleep, both in our office and in a hospital setting at Mackenzie Health Center. If your child has his/her dental treatment asleep, the pediatric dentist who preforms the treatment and the certified anesthesiologist who provides the anesthesia and monitors the child throughout.
Whether the general anesthetic is provided in the hospital or in the office, it is a certified anesthesiologist that provides the anesthetic. When done in the office, the patient is billed by the anesthesiologist for the general anesthesia, when the anesthetic is provided at Mackenzie Health, the costs related to the provision of the anesthetic are covered under OHIP.
